To the (Half) Moon and Back with Kennedy The Label
Annabelle Kennedy has built a brand different from the rest, unaffected by fleeting trends. Her luxury linen and Liberty of London print children’s clothing is designed to be worn, treasured and played in…before being passed down to the next generation. Inspiration taken from a bygone era.
On our recent visit to ‘Half Moon’, the family property near Nyngan, NSW, we got a glimpse at the life of a fashion founder in the outback. We met Annabelle’s daughters Lola, Flossy and Daisy, (her son was away at camp) who have grown alongside Kennedy The Label. If you’ve been following this business, you’ll be familiar with their angelic faces which have appeared in iconic Kennedy The Label campaign shoots.
Barley harvest was in full swing and the farm was humming. Annabelle spent the afternoon with us in her studio, telling stories of how she built her business. We rode with her ‘back to the tar’ to collect the kids from the school bus as she reflected on what it is that makes the women in her community special.
Though she didn’t grown up out here, Annabelle wouldn’t trade it for anything. She loves the life her children live. On the day we visit the kids are being entertained by a pet goat, a chicken called Ronda (not your average chicken), a puppy, a turtle and a tree smothered by butterflies. Not a device in sight.
She recounted the challenge of dispatching parcels in a flood year. A fortuitous birthday party with the neighbours meant that she could get her parcels to town despite the roads being cut. She threw the parcels in the back of the buggy, nursed the Elsa cake on her lap and asked her son to drive. When she arrived her face (and that of the Disney princess) resembled a speckled hen from the mud spots but the parcels made it out unscathed. “We make things happen,’ she says, ‘where there is a will, I can tell you, there is definitely a way.”
Annabelle certainly has made things happen. Kennedy The Label has garnered the attention of a global audience. Her clothing has appeared in the pages of British Vogue, Country Style and the Australian Women's Weekly. From her outback studio, her parcels make their way across the globe.
