Laura and her Mum, Sue, hand-make unique and ethically sourced feather accessories and homewares from their home in the Upper Hunter region of NSW.

Their Christmas wreaths, feather earrings and hat pins are fan favourites on BFTB! The feathers are collected from natural moulting, either from birds on their farm or from farms of friends and family.

We’ve just been to visit Laura, her husband Aaron, their sons, Banjo and Sid and their many birds and there was something magical about it. Laura’s Mum and Dad were there too. So were Aaron’s. We shared cake and tea and we watched as the boys fed the birds, climbed in the feed bucket, sidled up on the lap of their grandfather for a ride on the tractor and made themselves busy while Laura worked. At one stage, Banjo mustered a mob of sheep using a unique combination of stockman instinct and karate-chop arm motions.

We had the pleasure of seeing Laura and Sue work together. Sue told us that the remarkable colour and shine of Laura’s feathers was owing to the beautiful, healthy life that their birds have. I believed her. The turkey feathers glistened as she spoke.

As the women worked and chatted, it reminded me of what BFTB customers are buying when they purchase one of Laura’s creations. A little piece of this life is wrapped in a parcel and popped in the post. A mother’s love. A piece of Laura’s vision for this business. The hope that her kids will know the value of things and where they come from. That hard work can be rewarding. That what she is building matters.

When the Christmas wreaths were shared by BFTB last year they were inundated with orders. Laura and Sue set to work! Each wreath is one-of-a-kind, meticulously handcrafted using feathers and wood. They recounted the stress and excitement of that time.
