elly B Organic Skincare
elly B Organic Skincare
What do you make?
Organic skincare products that are hand crafted and made in small batches, using high-quality natural and Certified Organic plant ingredients in high concentrations to benefit your skin.
What do you want customers to know about you and/or your work/product/business?
I’ve been in the beauty industry for 20+ years. I’m a qualified Beauty Therapist and so do consultations remotely and in my salon, Botanica Beauty Studio in Armidale NSW. Because I get to see and touch people’s skin all the time, I love to help solve skin issues and am always happy to help and have a chat. elly b is firstly, and always will be, a customer-orientated business.
We have also recently won 4 Organic Beauty Brands Awards for our products, which is very exciting.
Where do you draw inspiration?
Each elly b product must be necessary for good skin care - and not just another product for the sake of having another product! Similarly, each ingredient has to be beneficial and work synergistically together. There’s something very therapeutic about the ritual of mixing creams. Even after so many years I still enjoy the methodology of making formulations, and I absolutely love being surrounded by all the delicious aromas.
Skin care doesn’t have to be complicated, so we have a very simple skin care range on purpose. Having said that - there are so many beautiful ingredients out there that sometimes it’s hard to know where to stop.
What are your hopes for your business/work/practice?
I hope to be able to work on elly b full time one day. And be able to keep close to customers and the regional community, as it’s the support that drives the excitement to keep going. And also understanding what people need from us and how we need to evolve - e.g. more sustainable packaging, knowing more about the benefits of ingredients.
Where do you live? Tell us about your place/community
Our little family team is spread far and wide…what would we do without mobile phones? I now live in the pristine New England region, but elly b began in Western Qld on a property near St. George. One daughter Claire, lives in London and looks after marketing. And my other daughter Penelope, currently living in Tasmania, helps with the business side of things. And the ‘office dog’ is Ellie the corgi!
What is it like making/creating from a rural/remote community? (are there particular challenges or joys?)
The joy is being surrounded by the countryside – nothing beats that. Challenges can sometimes be getting stuff here, no such thing as an overnight delivery, so you need to be very organised.
I still get great satisfaction from finished products that I’ve made, bottled, labeled and packaged and sent to a customer…it’s a complete end-to-end journey having a boutique small business.
How has BFTB impacted your business?
We love BFTB! The sense of support and being involved with other fabulous bush businesses. It has also meant that we have increased our customer base and sales all over Australia. We are very grateful to be a part of this brilliant community to promote bush businesses.
Rural and remove communities need Australian small businesses. There is a huge amount of talent in our areas and the best part is we love sharing each other’s successes.
What does it mean to you when a customer decides to purchase your product? How do you celebrate?
I love how you can make your customers a personal gift every time they order by presenting products in a beautiful way and adding a hand-written note. And I love when people entrust you to provide skin care products again and again, that will make a difference, and make them feel beautiful.
Celebrating is generally emojis exchanges over group messages with the girls, or occasionally a hurried ‘any chance you could fly up and help Mum?’ depending on the scale!
